How To Get More Customers To Your Business
Last time, we discussed our new series called ” The marketing plan for small business“ and introduced (or re-introduced) three strategies that will grow your business. Read on as I dissect each strategy starting with the first-Increase the Number of Customers.
Create a Customer Avatar
First things first. To get more customers, you need to know your audience. Creating a customer avatar will help you pinpoint exactly what kind of customer you should be attracting. A customer avatar is simply a description of the ideal client for your product or service. Everyone is NOT your customer or your ideal client!
Try this exercise:
Write down as much about your ideal client as possible:
- Be specific here – it is useless otherwise.
- What is the age of your ideal client?
- Is your ideal client Married?
- Have Kids?
- What is their Income Level?
- Do they have any Hobbies?
- What Books do they read?
- What about their Passions?
- What type of Work do they do? In what Industry?
- What kind of car they drive?
- What do they look for in businesses they buy from?
- What kind of clothes do they wear after work?
Again, the more specific you are here, the better this will work for you. Perhaps you have an ideal client-someone you say, “I wish I had more clients like ______________”. You can use one of your best clients for this exercise. Don’t be afraid to add more details about that client if necessary to hone in on your ideal client description. This is for your eyes only.
Write down ALL of the details you can think of when you picture your ideal client. Now turn it into a bio or speech that is coming from them. “My name is (perfect clients name here), details on them……” A good idea is to turn your findings into a WANTED poster like back in the western days. Add a photo of a person and give your avatar a name.
It’s quirky but it will be fun and help you to keep your focus on marketing to your ideal client.
How Will This Help Me Get More Customers?
Many of the gurus stress how important it is to know who your audience. If you are spending your marketing dollars on everyone, you are wasting money, time, and your efforts will not bring many results. Wouldn’t you rather have your dollars go directly to the folks who will actually buy your product or use your service? As much as you hear the joke about the salesman who can sell ice to Eskimos, you wouldn’t want to market to clients who don’t need your service.
Knowing your ideal client allows you to develop better relationships easily because they know you understand them. They know you are offering products or services that they need or want. They want to do business with you and will continue doing business with you throughout their lifetime.
